Copper is [link|https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/FA165|toxic to many invertebrates] and can damage gills, kidneys, and other organs of most fish. People living in areas with high e-waste dumping [link|https://www.resource-recovery.net/sites/default/files/a_review_on_human_health_consequences_of_metals_exposure_to_e-waste_in_china.pdf|have heavy metals in their bodies] at rates that indicate susceptibility to cancers, neurodevelopmental disorders, thyroid dysfunction, and DNA damage.

Repair is [link|https://www.ifixit.com/Right-to-Repair/Recycling|better than recycling], for reducing the amount of e-waste we generate and for conserving the materials and energy that go into electronics manufacturing. Seelampur demonstrates some of the challenging balances of e-waste collection schemes: Currently, [link|https://theconversation.com/electronic-waste-is-recycled-in-appalling-conditions-in-india-110363|95% of India's e-waste] is processed by informal, illegal waste pickers, an incredibly high collection and processing percentage. The economy in Seelampur is so dependent on the processing of e-waste that even though pollution makes the skies gray and workers often die of respiratory problems, locals are reluctant to disrupt the status quo. Changes to the system will need to weigh the lives and livelihoods of the informal waste picking network against the benefits of modernizing e-waste recycling in India. Ideally, governments will find a way to leverage the informal network's incredible collection rates and integrate the informal workers into the developing formal recycling system.

Today, there are a few dozen formal e-waste recyclers in India (see lists below). Asia as a whole not only accounts for the majority of EEE sales, but also generates the highest volume of e-waste—estimated at 16 million tonnes in 2014. However, on a per capita basis, this amounts to only to 3.7 kg per inhabitant, as compared to Europe and the Americas, which generate nearly four times as much per capita — 15.6 kg per inhabitant.

With growing incomes, consumers in Asia now replace their gadgets more frequently. In addition, many products are designed for low-cost production, but not necessarily repair, refurbishment or easy recycling.

All the countries in the region control e-waste either via the Basel Convention or their national legal frameworks. However, measures to control the import of second-hand electronics and e-waste are different among the countries and regions. There are two types of control measures for the import of e-waste and second-hand electronics: 1) to control the import of e-waste and  not restrict the import of second-hand electronics (Province of China Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, Republic of Korea, Singapore and Vietnam); and 2) to prohibit the import of e-waste and prohibit or restrict the import of second-hand electronics (Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Vietnam).[/quote]

Er wordt op de wereld ieder jaar meer dan [link|https://theconversation.com/global-electronic-waste-up-21-in-five-years-and-recycling-isnt-keeping-up-141997|50 miljoen ton] aan elektronisch afval (e-afval of ''e-waste'') geproduceerd. Er wordt van deze hoeveelheid echter slechts [link|https://www.azocleantech.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=689|12.5% gerecycled], waarbij er niet één land op de wereld is dat ook maar de helft van het e-afval recycled. Als e-afval in de afvalbak belandt, is de kans groot dat het leidt tot watervervuiling en schade aan natuur en (wilde) dieren.

Maar, helaas leidt ook reparatie nog steeds tot e-afval, in de vorm van gebarsten schermen en versleten batterijen. Deze "gespendeerde" onderdelen zouden naar een ***recycler van elektronica moeten gaan en niet zomaar moeten worden weggegooid.***

== Breng je e-afval naar een gecertificeerd recycle-station ==

Recycle-stations kunnen veel van de materialen in elektronica herstellen voor hergebruik. Er zit uiteindelijk ook [link|https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/10/20/royal-mint-electronic-waste-precious-metals/|meer dan 100 keer zo veel goud] in een ton aan telefoons als in een ton aan gouderts.

Een groot aantal ''big box'' ketens verwelkomen ook e-afval, maar wees je ervan bewust dat [link|https://www.theverge.com/2021/12/27/22852544/walmart-lawsuit-hazardous-ewaste-california|een aantal van] of [link|https://securis.com/news/7-4-million-fine-for-illegally-throwing-e-waste-in-the-trash/|deze ketens] aangeklaagd zijn voor het op illegale wijze weggooien van e-afval en andere gevaarlijke materialen. == Hoe recycle je oplaadbare batterijen? ==

Het vervangen van de batterij van je toestel is een van de beste manieren om je toestel nieuw leven in te blazen. Maar daarbij is het wel net zo belangrijk dat je ***de versleten lithium-ion batterijen niet zomaar thuis in de normale prullenbak dumpt.***

Batterijen vereisen een specifieke behandeling, wat betekent dat niet alle e-afval recycle-stations batterijen accepteren. Zorg dus dat je zeker weet dat het recycle-station in jouw buurt jouw type batterij accepteert en goed verwerkt voordat je je batterijen afgeeft.

=== Wacht even, batterijen kunnen exploderen?! En in brand vliegen?! ===

Over het algemeen zijn batterijen veilige objecten. De kans is nog steeds vele malen groten dat [link|https://www.consumerreports.org/safety-recalls/why-lithium-ion-batteries-still-explode-and-whats-being-done-to-fix-the-problem/|je door een bliksemschicht wordt getroffen] dan dat je lithium-ion batterij in brand vliegt.

Je loopt echter een veel groter risico als je voor een afvalverwerkings- of recyclingsbedrijf werkt. Deze bedrijven werken namelijk met compactors, shredders en andere machines die objecten in grote getalen tot compacte, makkelijker handelbare pakketjes omturnen. Als een batterij in een shredder of compactor belandt, kan deze openbarsten en vlam vatten, wat tot een grotere brand kan leiden. Sinds 2017 zijn de branden in afvalverwerkingsbedrijven, veroorzaakt door batterijen, [link|https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlepdf/2021/ee/d1ee00691f|met 38% toegenomen] en wordt 90% van de branden bij recycle-stations veroorzaakt door lithium-ion batterijen.

=== De zware metalen in batterijen vergiftigen ons drinkwater ===

Als lithium-ion batterijen in een vuilstort belanden, dan is dat erg slecht nieuws voor ons allemaal: batterijen kunnen [link|https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlepdf/2021/ee/d1ee00691f|zware metalen] (zoals kobalt, koper en nikkel) en opgeloste gassen (zoals zwavelzuur) in de grond en nabijgelegen waterstromen lekken.

Het recyclen van je batterij betekent dus ook dat je de arbeiders van recyclings- en afvalverwerkingsbedrijven, de verwerkingslocaties en ook ons grondwater helpt te beschermen.

=== Wat moet ik doen met batterijen die slechts een keer worden gebruikt? ===

De [link|https://www.epa.gov/recycle/used-household-batteries|''US Environmental Protection Agency'' zegt] dat alkaline en zink-koolstofbatterijen normaal gesproken op veilige wijze in de normale afvalbak kunnen worden weggegooid. Sommige overheden hebben echter wetten opgesteld die het verbieden om batterijen voor eenmalig gebruik in het reguliere afval weg te gooien. Wat we in ieder geval weten is dat als jouw lokale recyclingsstation ook batterijen voor eenmalig gebruik accepteert, dat het te allen tijde beter is ze daar in te leveren. Op die manier bespaar je een heleboel energie; doordat de materialen in de batterij kunnen worden hergebruikt, door de energie die in het mijnen en produceren van batterijen gaat te besparen en door potentieel gevaarlijke materialen uit het afval te houden.

Vele afvalverwerkingsbedrijven voor huishoudafval accepteren ook batterijen die slechts eenmalig kunnen worden gebruikt en die gevaarlijke materialen bevatten.

India is de op twee na grootste e-afvalproducent ter wereld, na China en de VS. Ondanks pogingen om de e-afvalverwerking te reguleren, blijft een groot deel van het e-afval naar India geïmporteerd worden en wordt het [link|https://theprobe.in/seelampur-soaring-e-waste-in-indias-largest-e-waste-market-puts-lives-at-risk/|ongereguleerd gerecycled in plaatsen als Seelampur].

Seelampur laat zien hoe complex en uitdagend e-afvalrecycling kan zijn: momenteel wordt [link|https://theconversation.com/electronic-waste-is-recycled-in-appalling-conditions-in-india-110363|95% van India's e-afval] verwerkt door ongereguleerde, illegale afvalverwerkers, wat een ontzettend hoog percentage is. De economie van Seelampur is zo afhankelijk van de e-afvalverwerking dat ondanks dat de lucht grijs is door luchtvervuiling en de meeste afvalverwerkers uiteindelijk overlijden als gevolg van aandoeningen aan de luchtwegen, de lokale bewoners weinig (kunnen) doen tegen de desastreuze gevolgen. We zouden de levens van de illegale afvalverwerkers in acht moeten nemen, en met de voordelen van het moderniseren van de afvalverwerking in het achterhoofd moeten streven naar een systeemverandering die ons allemaal ten goede komt. Daarbij moet worden gezorgd dat de afvalverwerkers, die verbazingwekkende verwerkingspercentages weten te overleggen, hun 'baan' niet verliezen, maar juist worden geïntegreerd in een gezonder en duurzamer verwerkingssysteem voor e-afval.

Vandaag de dag zijn er een dozijn aan gereguleerde e-afvalverwerkers in India (zie de lijst hieronder). In februari van 2022 heeft de overheid in Delhi plannen aangekondigd om het [link|https://www.hindustantimes.com/cities/delhi-news/narela-to-get-india-s-1st-e-waste-park-101645747115648.html#:~:text=The%20Delhi%20government%20will%20build,Manish%20Sisodia%20said%20on%20Thursday.|eerste e-afval recyclingspark in het land] te gaan bouwen, in de industriële gebied dat bekend staat als Narela.

Producenten moeten ook een symbool op hun producten plaatsen dat aangeeft dat producten niet zomaar in het huishoudafval mogen worden weggegooid. In 2023 worden ondernemingen tevens geacht dat ze minimaal 70% van het e-afval doorsturen naar recyclings- of demontagecentra.

== Wetgeving omtrent e-afval en recyclingslocatalisators in Azië ==

Volgens de [link|https://unu.edu/media-relations/releases/e-waste-in-east-and-south-east-asia-jumps-63-percent-in-five-years.html|Verenigde Naties],

[quote]..is Azië de grootste verbruiker van elektrische en elektronische toestellen (EEE — electrical and electronical equipment, oftewel alles met een batterij of een stekker). Het koopt bijna de helft van alle EEE die wereldwijd verkocht worden. Azië is niet alleen de grootste aankoper van EEE, maar genereert ook het meeste e-afval—ongeveer 16 miljoen ton in 2014. Dat komt neer op 3.7 kg per inwoner, terwijl we in Europa en Amerika vier keer zoveele-wastel per inwoner genereren, wel 15.6 kg per inwoner.

Omwille van een stijgend inkomen vervangen consumenten in Azië hun gadgets steeds vaker. Bovendien zijn vele producten ontworpen om goedkoop geproduceerd te worden, maar niet noodzakelijk om gemakkelijk gerepareerd of gerecycled te worden.

Alle landen in de regio regelen hun elektronisch afval ofwel met de internationale afspraken vastegelegd in de Conventie van Bazel, ofwel met nationale frameworks. Maatregelen om de import van gebruikte elektronica te controleren verschillen tussen de landen en de regio's. Er zijn twee soorten controlemechanismes: 1) de invoer van e-waste reglementeren en de invoer van tweedehands elektronica vrijlaten (Taiwan, China, Japan, de Filipijnen, Zuid Korea, Singapore en Vietnam); en 2) de invoer van e-waste verbieden en de invoer van tweedehands elektronica verbieden of beperken (Cambodja, China, Hong Kong, Maleisië and Vietnam).[/quote]

== Wetgeving omtrent e-afval in Afrika en recyclingslocalisator ==

Voor een lange tijd werd Afrika gebruikt als de ***vuilstort*** van 's werelds e-afval. Afvalproducenten uit voornamelijk het Globale Noorden stuurden hun kapotte en overbodige elektronica richting het continent, waar kinderen het afval scheidden en verwerkten. In de rapporten kwam naar voren hoe slecht het er aan toe gaat op de Agbogbloshie-vuilstort in Ghana.

Nu Afrikaanse consumenten echter steeds meer in staat zijn om nieuwe technologische apparaten aan te schaffen, zijn producenten van elektronica ook meer aan die behoefte gaan voldoen, met [link|https://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prMETA48173521|Transsion-smartphones] als meest dominante speler. Afrika produceert  [link|https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s42452-022-04962-9|2.9 Mt aan e-afval] per jaar en recyclet officieel slechts 0.9% daarvan.
